Beauty Notes: Should women like Keri Hilson get beauty endorsements?

I’ve always liked Keri Hilson since Return the Favour, which to me was a fabulous single that should have popped off. Keri is popular these days and her career is growing. She is a beautiful woman and that goes without saying. Last year, Women’s Wear Daily reported that AVON picked up Keri Hilson to be one of their spokespeople. I just remembered this recently, and it got me thinking: are women like Keri Hilson the new standard for beauty endorsements?

In terms of black women in the public eye, Beyonce and Rihanna have the highest amounts of beauty endorsements, with Beyonce doing L’Oreal and Rihanna doing CoverGirl. Keri Hilson is a bit different – she did not go the traditional route to get successful and she is a respected songwriter. By picking her, is AVON showing that they are trying to appeal to an older crowd of black female consumers?

I think it’s great that she got an endorsement because I think it highlights that some beauty companies see a diversity in black women and therefore want to target different types of black female consumers with their products.

What do you think about different types of black female celebrities like Keri getting endorsements?

Keri @ VMAs = Bad Bitch!

How are Keri’s ta-ta’s holding up? Titty tape can’t be the only thing. I am a big-chested girl (UK G-Cup) so I know my dreams of wearing a top like this are a distant dream. Do any of you wear tops with huge plunging V’s like that? What do you do about your ta-ta’s? What kind of attention do you get from men?

And don’t even dream of saying strapless bras to me, because these G Cups & strapless bras do not mate properly. Trust me!

Keri Hilson in London!

Feelin’ alright boy, I feel just fine.

I really like Keri & a lot of her songs are on repeat in my mp3. This is her yesterday in the capital leaving her hotel to go clubbing.

She’s so pretty and those Afrocentric earrings are the heaviest earrings I have seen in a while!

Keri Hilson scores her first UK Top #5 Hit!

Knock You Down is #5!

I am really shocked. I knew the song was a banger but wow! Number 5 out of the top 40 is amazing, considering she is a new artist and not many people know her here.

Return the Favour was a top 20 hit here as well, reaching #19.

Can’t wait to see Keri do some dates.

edit: KYD was also Keri’s first ever #1 in New Zealand. Hard work does pay off!

Black Girls in Magazines: Keri Hilson/944 Magazine

I had been checking for Keri since Return the Favour. It peaked at #19 on the UK chart so it was a top 20 hit! Congrats, Keri! People are already hating on this girl already. Must jar when a girl is beautiful and writes her own music!  She’s on the cover for 944 magazine. There is a behind the scenes video here.

I like this girl – I think she is cool. Her personality seems pretty wicked. I had seen her vlogs on YouTube and ended up liking her. I may get that alb of hers in a bit.

Mashed-Up: Dre, Marshall & Keri

[NB: There will be profanity in this post so NSFW]

Dre: By the time Dre release Detox, I think I probably will remember what it feels like to have a man. And I have not had that kind of sexual attention in years, technically, this means that Detox will not even come out this year. Dre produced Crack A Bottle (more on that below), and it sounds lovely. Why can’t he just release his own music now? I thought Detox was coming out in spring. At any rate, Dre better come to London to promote this album. And speaking of Dre affiliated artists…

[Image Source] - Is it wrong that I find this man attractive?

Charcoal Fact: One thing many people don’t know about me is that I am huge Eminem fan. My childhood friend P knows of my obsession. I loved him so much when I was in secondary schools in the valleys of Surrey. Then, after the film & Proof’s untimely death, Eminem went quiet. However, Crack A Bottle, a leaked song from E, trickled its’ way onto the Internet in December 2008.

Crack A Bottle: I finally listened to Crack today. I know, I know. How can you be an E fan if you only listened to it today? I am one of this strange fans. I am not a maybe fan, I am a 100% hardcore fan and I try very hard not to listen to leaked music from artists I like until I purchase the album. This goes for people I stan for like Beyonce & Eminem. My feelings on Crack are as follows: he starts the song like he is singing the chorus, which is an assault on the ears in the way because the song just hits you so quickly. I love the “you just hit the lotto” line – this bloke knows how to use his voice to make certain lines memorable. I like what I am hearing so far – he sounds energised and he comes across confident and almost cheerful on the song. I will be finding Relapse when the album comes out. I have a good feeling about it. Eminem’s songs also remind me of someone who I used to have lots of laughs with, so it is nostalgic listening to it.

Keri Hilson: I will not download this girl’s album. I will not download! Jokes aside, I loved Return The Favour, it was a typical Timbo song but I love her cadence on certain verses like the way she says certain things, they sound hot. I just hope her management know what they are doing because I can’t find a European release for her album yet and I think that is a HUGE mistake because releasing it here will help her create an international fanbase.

Either way, I do like other artists besides the Queen Bee herself and I will be looking forward to seeing these three artists come out with their albums. As usual, I welcome your thoughts – just keep it civil but please swear as much as you want ;)

P/S – Brandy is coming to tour in London as well in May!

My 7 Favourite R&B/Pop Singles of 2008

7. Alesha Dixon/The Boy Does Nothing

Uploaded by Jay230288. This was the Children in Need performance.

Alesha’s career seems rejuvenated by Strictly Come Dancing, which she won last year. The Boy Does Nothing peaked at #5 in the UK Chart, which was Alesha’s highest ever solo standing in the chart.

Brilliant chart position and it sticks two fingers up to Javine Hylton and Harvey, the latter who was Alesha’s ex husband. The reason it does this (in my view) is because it was co-written by Xenomania, the songwriting group who write Girls Aloud’s songs. Javine missed the cut to be part of Girls Aloud years ago as part of the reality show, Popstars. How sweet is revenge? Go Alesha!

It’s a poppy, fresh and energetic song that makes me want to exercise, so it must be doing something right.

6. Rihanna/Rehab

rihanna_rehabph2072, I cannot believe there is a Rihanna song from GGGB that she has released that I actually like. I was always an SOS/Dem Haters girl. Rihanna has improved a lot. I still don’t buy this image change at all, but vocally, she has improved on this song, ph2072.

The endless beats peppering the album version of this song are trademark Timbaland production. The song was written by Justin Timberlake and he also stars in the video.

It’s bizarre sounding song meshed with the lyrics in a way, because the actual instrumental music in the background sounds like a melancholic serenading song, almost like music that would accompany a paean.

I think her voice suits songs that are slower and that have more of a chunkier sound to them. This song is not a ballad but it is more contemplative. So yes, ph2072, your girl is growing on me. Maybe b/c Rehab is mirroring my own life lol.

Rehab entered the UK chart at #24.

5. Madonna/Give it 2 Me

madonnaGive it to me, Madonna purrs or commands? Her tone of voice is vague and ambiguous on this song, almost like one is unsure whether she is energetic or commenting.

You’re only here to win, ‘fget what they say, Madge insists. The song has a lot of attitude and is one of the first times I think that Madonna actually sounds comfortable on a song.

I loved this song the first time I heard it. It has this almost snarky tone to it, encased in Pharrell’s heavy drum beats.

Thumbs up from me Madge, all the way in North London. I posted the music video a while ago when the song came out and for some reason, I even loved the song more with the video lol!

Many people on YT where saying that she was too old etc. So what? She is 50 and looks absolutely mindblowing with her figure.

Just look at this still from video:

Give it 2 Me, I’d be singing that too if my thighs looked like hers. The song peaked at #7.

4. Leona Lewis/Forgive Me

leona-lewis-2

The song peaked at #5 in the UK Chart. I actually really didn’t like it when I first heard it. Learning it was Akon’s brainchild didn’t help either. In fact, it is grower of a song. And Leona singing an uptempo song and not a ballad? It was refreshing to hear such a powerful voice sound playful especially when she belts:

And I need a man

Those cute injections of spunk and personality sound good on Leona, whose goodhearted nature sees her singing ballads only. She sounds good on this song, as always!

3. Keri Hilson/Return the Favour

keri-2

…Feelin’ alright boy, I feel just fine!

I loved this song the moment I heard it first. Again, Timbaland’s production is really good here, matching her vocalisation’s nicely but it was more how the lyrics were phrased that I liked:

–Think with your body, let it out!

I don’t even know why I like that line, but I just do ;) Maybe because the lyrics of the song are very ambiguous. Is she talking about under the belt favours or does she mean emotionally?

2. Britney Spears/Womaniser

The comeback single for Britney and what a song it is. The female issues it touches on could be a whole other post for me but I will leave it at that. It was a great choice for a song, sounded like an epic Britney song.  The song peaked at #3 in the UK chart.

1. Beyonce Knowles/Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)

beyoncesingleladies

If you like, if you like, then you shouldda…..

Bee steps back into the ring, except she will not be chewing opponents ears of like Mike Tyson. Audacious lyrics backed by a repetitive, almost chant like instrumental makes this song memorable not forgetting the dance moves, even when does a Kongolese style Ndombolo gyration at 0.50seconds in the video.

Conclusion: That concludes my 7 favourite songs of the year. I hope 2009 will bring more memorable songs for us all. Which songs did you like?

Video Commentary: Return the Favour – Keri Hilson & Tim

I really like this girl. I do actually think she is quite talented. Yes, the video is derivative but before anyone says she is copying Ri-bot, stand back because Ri-bot is the queen of derivative with wanting to be the black Madonna and all that bullshit.

Now back to Keri — she already placed herself on the map as a talented songwriter.Britney’s best song in my opinion was Gimme More and Keri Hilson co-wrote that so clearly something is going right.

0.00 – 0.20: Love that single earring she is wearing! Continue reading
