Black Men in Magazines: Why I don’t like Essence’s Cover Feature on Idris…

idrisidris

Idris Elba is the cover model for the August ’09 issue of ESSENCE. He’s also from Hackney, east London which is a stone’s throw from where I live in E17, so he gets a LOT of love in London & from this blog. However…did anyone else read the cover feature written by Jeannine Amber in this month’s ESSENCE? Am I the only one getting the impression that ESSENCE focus a little too hard on how Idris looks? It’s obvious that he is absolutely stunning but he is such a talented actor.Seems like such a shame to have the chance to interview Idris Elba but instead, the feature did not focus on his skills or his aspirations for acting etc but instead on how fine he is and how women find him fine.

I’m starting to get jarred with this. I am in ESSENCE‘s readership as a black woman, but I want more cerebral insights too. He’s a hot cup of chocolate, but why can’t we read about how he got there organically?

The Wire on BBC: These 4 Men Were Gorgeous!

The Wire has just come on BBC. The first ever episode so I am watching it now and WOW, how gorgeous are the men here? I knew about Idris’ fine arse being on The Wire but you lot did not tell me about this guy, Wood Harris. I remember him from Above The Rim & Remember The Titans. He is absolutely gorgeous.

Dominic West can get it. We all know I’m about the black but he is with David Beckham and Eminem on the ship of cute white guys.

Idris Elba – This man looks like he could convert any woman. Just beautiful.

4. Michael K. Williams

This man has a nubian, almost regal look to him. Very sexy in my book at any rate.

I saw Meagan’s (and Idris’) film today…

I went to Wood Green today and watched The Unborn by myself. I don’t even know how I did that seeing that I hate going to the cinema alone to watch horror-thrillers. The Unborn follows a young woman, Casey, who is tormented by a dybbuk, a lost soul according to Jewish mysticism. Meagan plays Casey’s best friend. It’s a small part but she lights up the screen when she is on it.

Orville mentioned something in a comment of one of my posts that she is one of the black actresses who could headline a film at the moment. She is beautiful, has screen presence and can act. The Unborn is a chilling thriller. If it is meant to make you think twice about supernatural shit, it got me thinking.

I would give it 2/5 coals for the look of the film and the fast pace. The story could have dealt with more explaining though.

P/S – Any Idris fans, his sexy arse/body/face was also in the film in a small but as always gorgeous role. Although I miss his Hackney accent.

I’m sorry…

OBSESSED

…I couldn’t help myself from posting. [image found here]

Bee has her hands on my drink of organic chocolate. Anyroad, the trailer of Obsessed leaked earlier this week.

What are all your thoughts about it?

I absolutely loved Fatal Attraction so before anyone makes the comparison, deffo and why not? FA was not the first stalker film and it will not be the last one. Glenn Close was magnetic in that film and I think the genre of film is a brilliant device for exploring portrayals of femininity which is why I am eager to seeing this film.

Ali Larter, Final Destination and Varsity Blues actress, will be playing an infatuated coworker of Mr Elba who of course has her eyes set on ensnaring/capturing/converting him. Beyonce Knowles is Mr Elba’s wife.

Let the dramatics ensue!

Postscript: Went to cinema today and watched Changeling. Expect a review today or tomorrow!
