Closet Purge

This weekend I decided it was time to do a closet purge, which consist of me going through my closet and deciding it was time to part with clothing, shoes and purses. Because I know it’s so hard for me to part with my clothing and other items I had to come up with a plan. I decided in the next 5 weeks I would pick 3 items from 5 different categories to sell on eBay. The 5 categories include:

  1. Dresses
  2. Shoes
  3. Skirts
  4. Jeans
  5. Purses

Whatever I don’t sell I will give to friends, family, thrift store depending on the item. This week I picked out three dresses to part with and this is what I considered:

  1. Can I fit the item?
  2. When’s the last time I wore it?
  3. Do I still like it?

Here are the three dresses I put up on eBay; these items will be on here for one week.

1. Old Prom Dress from 2005

2. Hot Pink Animal Print Party Dress

3. Black and White Shift Dress

4 Conditioners I Use to Snap My Hair Back in Shape

My hair was just taken out of the tree braids that I’ve been wearing for about a month and a half. I know a reader asked me in a previous post could they see a better picture of my braids. Well those pics are coming soon I decided to get my hair re-braided so the style is more fresh and clear to see in a picture.

I think one of the most important things to do after taking down your hair from a style is a good condition to snap the hair back in shape. As some of you may know or have experienced certain styles can wear and tear on the hair making it weak. I know most of the styles we wear are supposed to be “protective styles” but even those have their pros and cons.

Lately I’ve been using about 4 products to condition my hair and 1 brush to detangle. Continue reading

To Cut or Not to Cut Your Natural Ends?

There has been great debate on whether or not women with natural hair should cut their ends. Some say cutting dead ends of a natural is not good because it stunts hair growth. Where others have said the exact opposite that not cutting your ends will not allow your hair to grow. Continue reading

Work, Life & Hair Update

I’ve been ghost for a while now thanks to the joys of having a job and somewhat of a social life. It’s been about 4 ½ months since I’ve been in Atlanta and I have to say I’m enjoying my new fresh start. I’m single, independent, and working and that’s all that matters at the moment. As far as my new job that I’m grateful to have, I don’t entirely love it but I love aspects of it. I know I don’t have to be at this job forever but since I am here I will do my best and take what I can from it to move forward in my career. Continue reading

Women Need to Negotiate More

I came across this great article called “Why Women Don’t Negotiate” on Forbes and let me say I can totally relate.  When it comes to negotiating as far as money, I find it rather hard to do. I recently started working for a company and when it came to negotiating my salary I felt really stuck. I felt as if I couldn’t ask for more because I was scared I wasn’t going to get the job.

Right now I can kick myself for not stepping out and asking for more. I believe other aspects played a role in why I didn’t ask for more, one being I was negotiating with a man. I honestly think if it had been a woman I was negotiating with, I would have spoken up. The Forbes article states three points I agree with …

“… Women suffer economically because we fail to ask, but we’re punished for our nerve when we do ask. We’re damned if we do and damned if we don’t, right?”

“Not only has our culture instilled in women a disinclination to be self-serving, when we do work up the nerve to ask, we’re likely to experience “gender blow-back”—a subtle but powerful punishment for stepping outside our cultural gender role.”

“What we need to do is learn to powerfully ask for our true market value. We can do that by starting the conversation with offers of benefits rather than requests.”

I know next time around I will be speaking up. Do you negotiate?

Postponing Goals: Is This Good or Bad?

I’m two weeks into my new job which is full of new responsibilities and as much as I’m excited to be getting into my new role, I am also very overwhelmed. Yes, it’s only been two weeks but I already have a lot of work on my plate. Of course it’s going to take some time to get into this new work flow and no I’m not going to be able learn everything at the snap of a finger, but I feel this new position is going to take up most of my time. With that being said I have a list of goals I want to have accomplished by next year and I feel with this job some may need to be postponed.

The objective here is not to totally wipe out all my goals but to come up with a way to reach them in a manner that works with my new work life. I’ve come up with a list that may help me still be able to achieve my goals …

  1. Evaluate each goal and rate them based on which goals will take the least & most time.
  2. Take at least 2 days out of the week and work on one of my goals for at least 2 hours.
  3. Break down my bigger goals into smaller goals.

I don’t know if postponing will necessary be bad but well definitely see. What do you think?

Hair Update: Let Your Hair Breathe

Sometimes you have to let your hair breathe and that’s exactly what I did last week. I took out the yarn braids and did a deep condition that I left in for about 3 hours. For my deep conditioner mix I used Jane Carters “Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner” and added Coconut oil, Jojoba oil, Apricot oil and lastly Argan oil. I wore my hair twisted for about 3 days and then twisted out for next 2 days. Once the cold winds hit my scalp and I was no longer able to stand it I returned to my yarn twist.

P.S. If your looking for a really good condiotioner for “deep conditioning” purposes try these two:

Want, Wish and Need

Yes, I WANT some new heels. Yes, I WISH I could get those $165 heels. But do I NEED them?

This is a  question I ask myself often when I’m shopping. I know we all have WANTS and WISHES, but do we actually NEED these items. Believe me if it was up to me I would love to add another shelf of heels to my already existing ones, but my main priority are my finances. I think when it comes to material items and finances, black women are more likely to spend on material items over their financial priorities. Sometimes we may splurge a little too much, which I think has happen to us at all least once but constant spending of what you don’t have does not add up. Here are a couple of things I do before spending: Continue reading

Pre-New Year’s Eve Fashion & Beauty Bash

Last night I had the opportunity to attend a Pre-New Year’s Eve Fashion & Beauty Bash hosted by blogger Curly Lexi from Curls Coils and Kinks and stylist and makeup artist Danielle from The Style & Beauty Doctor. The event took place in Atlanta at Sole Shoes where attendees were able to shop, mingle, and discuss natural hair.

Throughout the event they had many beauty stations including an eyelash bar where they had two professionals putting on individual eyelashes for $25, and a lipstick bar where you could try on different shades of lipstick of your choice and take with you. The night also included three fashion shows with models wearing clothing from the store itself and many raffles with cool beauty prizes.

I didn’t leave empty handed I was given a goody bag filled with some great smell goods. Take a look at the pictures below.
