…being back in my mother’s village was fine because we were there for familial reasons but some of the people in my village kind of annoyed me with their attitude towards me and my hair and my upbringing.
- Why don’t you relax your hair?
- Can you comb your hair in the morning?
Usually asking questions is never a bad thing but come on, from your own people? Very surprising.
A few hair trends I saw in my mum’s village were:
- cornrows for many of the young girls, which is normal in many schools
- relaxers of course, but one trend is relaxers and then curled with tongs thereafterwards
- short, cropped hair in the number 1 hairstyle (think amber rose but not dyed)
I love talking about black hair, whether it is natural or not, but I do think questions like ‘why don’t you relax your hair?’ are futile when they have seen me natural before!
